Could Your Child Have Dysphagia?
Dysphagia is a broad term used to describe feeding and swallowing disorders during any phase of eating and drinking, beginning at the lips and ending at the esophagus.
Speech-language Pathologists are uniquely trained to help children with dysphagia through individually tailored treatment plans. But how does a family know if their child needs this type of treatment?
Look for These Signs
Some signs that your child might have dysphagia include:
avoidant or “picky” eating
coughing
gagging
vomiting during or after meals
loss of liquids or foods at the front of the mouth when chewing & swallowing
food stuffing
The American Speech Language & Hearing Association (ASHA) has a comprehensive list of signs to watch for in young children.
